Norwegian Embassy attended the commemoration of the World Food Day

Last updated: 21/10/2010 // World food day, October 16th 2010, was commemorated at Hamelmalo Agricultural College (HAC) outside the town of Keren. The Norwegian Embassy attended the ceremony together with 300 invited guests and staff of the college.

Hamelmalo Agricultural College started in 2005 after the restructuring of the University of Asmara.  The college is established as the center in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Management to provide training to undergraduate and post graduate studies, conducting research and providing outreach services to the agricultural sector of Eritrea.

As per today the college offers Bachelor’s and Diploma Degrees and is now in the process of preparing for Master’ Degrees. The Norwegian Embassy has supported the college with laboratory equipment, books for the library and capacity building.

The World Food Day  2010 entered its  30th year under the theme ”United Against Hunger”. The opening ceremony was introduced by speeches by Mr. Semere Amlesom, Dean of the college and the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, followed by messages of Mr. Ban-Ki Moon, UN Secretary General and Mr .Jacques Diouf, Director General of FAO.

The program included also field visits to various demonstrations sites around the college, and the commemoration event was concluded with a lunch under the magnificent mango trees dating from the Italian colonial time.
