Last updated: 25/10/2010 // The Delegation of the European Union together with the European Diplomatic Missions and Cultural Agencies is pleased to announce the 8th European Film Week. This year’s festival features a diverse lineup of the best of European cinema, including films and animation for children and a final lottery draw. The festival will travel around the country starting in Massawa on the 10th and 11th of November, moving to Keren and Dekhamare on the 13th and 14th of November with the main programme coming to Asmara from the 27th of November to the 3rd of December. In this year’s film week you have the opportunity to enjoy movies from a diverse group of countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Romania, and the United Kingdom.

This year’s film week in Asmara will open with a special screening for invited guests of the Belgian film HOP at Casa degli Italiani on 26th November.  HOP is the story of Justin, a young illegal immigrant, who just wants to sit and enjoy watching a game of football with his father. This simple act is the first in a chain that leads to him running from the law and then into a fight to reunite with his father.

Other highlights include the French drama Coco before Chanel by Anne Fontaine; the thrilling German docudrama, John Rabe, by Oscar-winning director Florian Gallenberger; the Dutch drama, SKIN, based on the true story of the son of an Auschwitz survivor who becomes a Nazi-skinhead; and from two the newcomers to the film week, Spain and Poland, Heroina, a true and epic story about a handful of mothers who challenge a group of drug-dealers in order to save their sons, and Desire for love a film covering the love affair between Chopin and feminist writer George Sand. The wide selection of European films guarantees that viewers of all tastes will find a new favorite.

A special programme for children will be shown throughout the day in Cinema Hamassien, and at 10:00 and 14:00 in Casa degli Italiani and Cinema Roma, in Asmara. The children’s programme features cartoons for the youngest, but also more serious movies for those who are slightly older.
